My design for this musical focusses on the idea that in "Spring Awakening", children are the victims of a world that treats them as adults, without explaining the consequences of growing up. The adults attempt to repress the children's knowledge of human interactions & emotions, punishing free thought & divergence from societal rules. It was important that I found a way to bring this story into today's world because the themes of repression, ignorance & limiting knowledge are still very prevalent in today's society.
My primary design influence was inspired by the paintings of Balthus, whose paintings portray innocent young girls as he perceives them, while it is clear that the girls do not understand how the painter perceives them. These painting combined with the prison-like school uniforms of Europe, set the tone of the world of "Spring Awakening". The children in the story are braver than the adults in the world around them, and they fight to find freedom & love in a dark world.
